Maths
Vision Statement
Maths at Tanners Wood is fun, active, practical and engaging as we aim to develop a life-long love of maths and numbers. Our objective is to ensure that we teach a curriculum that is broad and balanced that is inline with the National Curriculum.
In EYFS, we establish an understanding of the fundamentals of key mathematical concepts and vocabulary by giving the children time to explore and investigate in a fun and practical way. We then build on this understanding, into KS1 and KS2, by deepening knowledge and nurturing confidence allowing pupils the freedom to practise and consolidate their mathematical thinking. Teachers extend this thinking by further developing reasoning and problem solving to apply their learning to a real-life context, which gives them a purpose for learning.
In order to support the children’s understanding and reasoning, we use the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) approach. As the children are introduced to new concepts, they work with concrete physical resources and pictorial representations. This then leads to a better understanding of abstract concepts as they progress through the school.
The use of mathematical language and fluency is at the heart of our teaching and learning and is crucial to success in maths. By using the ‘I do, We do, You do’ approach, we encourage our learners to become independent by using a variety of learning strategies and methods. The development of mathematical language throughout the school enables the children to express their ideas confidently and is crucial to explaining mathematical concepts and ideas.
By fostering this love of maths and number, we develop positive and resilient attitudes that can overcome problems by working systematically and logically.
