Personnal, Social, Health Education (PSHE)

Vision Statement

At Tanners Wood, we aim to educate all children to be prepared for opportunities in life. Through an understanding of the world, and of personal, social, health and emotional concepts using age-relevant vocabulary, children will be able to express themselves. We want them to feel safe, secure, healthy and happy and be resilient and tolerant and have self- respect and show respect towards each other.

We aim to provide a range of opportunities for children to develop themselves in a well-balanced way, beyond the academic moving from childhood towards adolescence. With support and guidance, we can encourage both an awareness of others and the growth of responsible independence.

Children will be taught Relationships and Sex Education, relevant their age, and Health Education with a strong focus on emotional, mental health and well-being.

As a school, we promote the use of a ‘growth mind-set’; these principles and British Values underpin our PSHE curriculum. We follow the ‘Jigsaw’ scheme, which we adapt and supplement where necessary.

We aim to stay abreast of this forever developing world including, but not limited to, technology. In this environment, we teach children how to be safe and healthy, and how to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way. PSHE will therefore be embedded across the curricular subjects as well as being taught as a standalone lesson.

To best meet the children’s needs, we aim to be adaptable and flexible when working in partnership with parents/carers, school staff and outside agencies, where applicable.

Through our ‘Smart School Council’, we aim to foster a democracy for all, allowing all pupils to have a voice through regular meetings and democratic discussions, run by the children, supported by the adults. This empowers learners to have more control over their own life.

We want to prepare children for the future, by encouraging the development of characteristics for life such as a love of learning, resilience, integrity, teamwork, critical thinking and independence.

We promote equality and diversity and our environment that reflects this. PSHE & RHSE Policy
